History of Glacier 3000

Company

History

From the initial idea for a cable car on the glacier to the major operating company Gstaad 3000 SA: here you will find all the information about our company’s history.

1959

First concession

The idea of linking the Col du Pillon with the Tsanfleuron Glacier was born. Two initiative committees from the cantons of Bern and Vaud applied for a licence to operate a cable car in the Diablerets massif region. The operating licence was granted by the Federal Department of Transport on condition that a junction station be built at the Cabane des Diablerets.

1963

Opening of the Pillon section

The LRD, the Reusch–Cabane des Diablerets AG cable car, is put into service with the two sections Reusch–Oldenegg and Oldenegg–Cabane. The Pillon–Pierres Pointes section, operated by TPD (Téléphériques Pillon – Glacier des Diablerets SA), is inaugurated.

1964

Connection with the Vaud region

In July, alongside the national exhibition, the first associated link on the Vaud side will be brought into service via the cable cars on the Diablerets Glacier (Pillon – Pierres Pointes – Cabane – Diablerets Glacier).

1971

First ski lift on the glacier

Construction and opening of the first ski lift (the DĂ´me ski lift) on the Tsanfleuron glacier for summer skiing.

1979

1997

Merger of LRD and TPD

The new company Glacier 3000 Région Les Diablerets - Gstaad SA has been formed through the merger of LRD and TPD. The existing ski lift facilities are being renovated, and the new Reusch–Oldenegg cable car is being built.

1999

New Glacier 3000 cable car

The new Glacier 3000 cable car is due to open in November.

2000

The Scex Rouge chairlift

2001

Botta Restaurant

Construction work on the Botta Restaurant, designed by the renowned architect Mario Botta, began in May 2000, and the restaurant opened in 2001.

2005

The new company Gstaad 3000 Ltd

Glacier 3000 has been taken over by three new investors (Marcel Bach, Bernie Ecclestone and Jean-Claude Mimran), with the aim of investing in enhancing the visitor experience and the quality of the mountain destination. The operating company Gstaad 3000 AG has been established.

2006

Snow conditions in the Combe d'Audon

At the start of the winter season, the new snowmaking system between the Col d'Audon and Oldenalp will be inaugurated. Thanks to this system, the 7-kilometre-long run down the Combe d'Audon is already open in early December and, weather permitting, remains open until the end of April.

2007

The Alpine Coaster

Opening of the Alpine Coaster. The world’s highest rail-based toboggan run is a new addition to Glacier 3000’s diverse range of attractions.

2014

The Peak Walk by Tissot

In October, the Peak Walk by Tissot was officially opened. It is the world’s first suspension bridge to connect two mountain peaks. To this day, it remains the number one attraction at Glacier 3000. The Watch and Souvenir Shop was also opened that same year.

2018

Red Run

Thanks to the Peak Walk by Tissot, Glacier 3000’s visitor centre has a strong offering. The company has decided to enhance the experience within its ski area. The creation of the Red Run is the first step in this process. This new run takes skiers down from Scex Rouge (3,000 m) to Reusch (1,300 m). At 8 km long, it is the longest ski run in the region.

2022

The Eurotel Victoria in Les Diablerets

The company is expanding its portfolio by acquiring the Eurotel Victoria in Les Diablerets, a 110-room superior 4-star hotel. Over €9 million will be invested to renovate the property and offer high-quality accommodation open all year round. In 2024, the property will be renamed The Glacier Hotel.

2022

The fire at Botta Restaurant

During the night of 18–19 September, a fire broke out accidentally at Restaurant Botta, situated at an altitude of 3,000 metres. 2023

The Black Wall

With a maximum gradient of 104%, the Black Wall ranks among the steepest groomed runs in the world. Thanks to a 265-metre tunnel bored through the mountain, this 3-kilometre run connects the summit of the ski area at 3,000 metres to the Col du Pillon (1,546 metres).

2023

The HĂ´tel les Sources

The HĂ´tel les Sources (3-star, 48 rooms) has joined Gstaad 3000 SA. Together with The Glacier Hotel, the company now operates 320 beds in the village of Les Diablerets.

2024

Opening of the Botta Restaurant

After two years of construction, Restaurant Botta, Le 3 and a new panoramic terrace are now ready to welcome visitors at an altitude of 3,000 metres. The new building generates more energy than it consumes thanks to the installation of 600 solar panels.

Team

Gstaad 3000 AG employs around 170 staff members who work every day of the year to welcome you to the Glacier 3000 resort or to our two hotels in Les Diablerets.
